Idaho Highway Historical Marker Signs

Roadside historic markers are our windows to the past. Idaho’s Highway Historical Marker Program was initiated in 1956 by Idaho’s former state historian, the late Dr. Merle Wells. Wells worked with others to install six “experimental markers”. Deemed a success, the program continued and is now operated cooperatively by the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) and the Idaho State Historical Society.

In 2014 the BMW (Bavarian Mountain West) Motorcycle Club of Idaho sponsored a contest to find all the highway historical marker signs scattered around Idaho. It turned out information about the location of these signs was hard to find.

This web-site has been put together as a means to easily locate Idaho's Highway Historical Marker Signs.
